- Why work with
Nathan? He listens differently. Having
been formally trained at a conservatory of music coupled with
his years of experience in the commercial music industry enables Nathan
to have a deeper conversation with you about your music than
most engineers. He, also, is a very detail oriented
person, willing to take the time to get your project right.
Nathan knows how to create the sonic vision for your project.
Through his relationships in the industry, experience, and
facility on the equipment he really can make you sound
world-class even when your budget is limited!
- Nathan records and mixes such a wide variety of music
because he believes that the songwriter, artist, musicians, and
arrangers shape the style of each project and it is the
engineer's job to capture this artistic vision "on tape" and
then present it to the listener in an emotional and inspiring
package. A great engineer is a perfect fit wherever great music
is being made no matter the genre. Nathan has worked on every style of music from CCM,
Gospel, Hip Hop, Country, R&B, Jazz, Classical, Rock, you name
it........
- What you are paying for
are Nathan's ears, experience,
and ability to facilitate your project and exceed your
expectations. Nathan knows what to do and who to call for each
style of music and each work situation!
-
Remember the mixing engineer can have the biggest impact on the
sound of your recording.
- Great tracks make a great mix. The earlier in the
recording process you involve a professional engineer/producer
the better the final outcome will be.
- Don't simply use a recording studio's staff engineer by
default. Hire an engineer you trust then choose a studio to
work at. Although some staff engineers are talented, just
because someone is employed by a studio does not necessarily
mean they are qualified to work on your album. Often they are
great second (assistant) engineers which is an important role
but what you need is an experienced "first" engineer.
- Recording in Nashville costs less and sounds better than
any other city in the world. Why is that? Because Nashville
is set up to help independent artists achieve their goals...The
union even has a limited release pay scale (for projects
printing less than 10,000 CD's) for session players, enabling
you to have access to the same players that play on the million
dollar projects. Studios in Nashville cost less simply because
of the high level of competition. There are literally
hundreds of studios in the greater Nashville area. That same
competition also stirs the talent pool so the working musicians
and engineers have honed their skills to survive a very
competitive climate.
- "But I don't do Country"
Not a Country
artist - don't be mislead. Nashville is Music City not
country music city. These guys can play... and play anything
on a level that is difficult to communicate. Hearing is
believing! Check your favorite album's liner notes... I
bet there are some Nashville cats and studios on there. Watch your song go from its musical infancy, strummed on a guitar or played from a demo tape, to a full album
ready track in an hour.... what??? Yep, it's amazing to
behold. It's an experience not to be missed.
- Using session players vs. friends to record your project...
1. Session players choose and maintain their gear specifically for the
studio environment
2. Session players usually know what you are looking for before
you even ask them for it! LOL They are equally proficient
in all styles of music and routinely switch from polar opposite
musical styles session to session and day to day. For them
this is not a hobby. It is what they do day in and day out
and they are the best in world at it.
3. Session players in Nashville typically only take one hour or
less to lay down a song. When you are paying
per hour for players, studio and engineer that equals a significant savings
4. Local musicians almost always have equipment problems in the
studio...rings, buzzes, guitars that will not stay in tune, etc.
5. Local musicians are never as fast at understanding or
realizing your
vision
6. Local players often have "groove" or "pocket"
inconsistencies. This is especially important for
drums since they are the foundation of a song which everything
else is built off of and they are also the
most difficult thing to get good sounds on.
7. It takes far more time to edit sessions when non session
players are used. Which always ends up costing more. Time
is money.
8. In the long run it does cost less to pay for seasoned studio
musicians.
9. Don't make the mistake of confusing great live players with
great studio players! And don't forget that when artists become
very successful, they can afford to bring session player level musicians on the road for
live gigs.......so that's why they sometimes use the same band
live and in
the studio!
